A home is about more than bricks, walls and a roof over your head. It is a place where people should feel safe, secure and able to build a future.
For many of us, having somewhere to call home is something we can easily take for granted. But for people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, having a safe and stable place to live can feel out of reach.
The Scale of Homelessness
Homelessness is a serious issue across England. According to the latest government figures, an estimated 4,793 people were sleeping rough on a single night in autumn 2025 – the highest figure recorded under the current reporting system and 171% higher than in 2010.
However, rough sleeping is only one part of homelessness. At the end of December 2025, 134,210 households were living in temporary accommodation in England, including 176,130 dependent children.
Homelessness Is More Than Rough Sleeping
People can experience homelessness in many different ways. This can include living in temporary accommodation, staying with friends or family because there is nowhere else to go, or living somewhere that is unsuitable or insecure.
People can find themselves without a stable home for many different reasons, including financial difficulties, relationship breakdown, rising housing costs, loss of employment or circumstances outside their control.
Why Having a Home Matters
A secure home provides more than somewhere to sleep. It can provide stability, privacy and a sense of belonging. It can make it easier for people to access employment, education and healthcare, maintain relationships and begin planning for the future.
Having a safe place to return to can provide the foundation people need to rebuild other areas of their lives.
Making a Difference
Tackling homelessness is a complex challenge, requiring support from charities, communities, organisations and individuals.
